Department of Physiological Sciences
Thematic Research Areas
At the OSU CVM, research in the Department of Physiological Sciences is driven by discovery, collaboration and innovation. Our thematic research areas—Oncology and Cancer Cell Biology, Metabolism and Healthy Aging, Neurodegeneration and Neuroscience, and Respiratory Infectious Disease—reflect a shared commitment to improving both animal and human health through a One Health approach.
Oncology and Cancer Cell Biology
The Oncology and Cancer Cell Biology program unites basic and translational research
to advance cancer treatment through a One Health approach. Researchers study tumor
biology, therapeutic response, and molecular mechanisms such as DNA repair, oxidative
stress, and cell signaling, bridging veterinary and human oncology to drive innovative,
comparative discoveries.
Metabolism and Healthy Aging
The Metabolism and Healthy Aging program investigates how metabolic dysfunction and
obesity contribute to age-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular
disorders. Researchers explore pharmacological, dietary, and lifestyle interventions
to improve metabolic health, prevent chronic disease, and promote longer, healthier
lives.
Neurodegeneration and Neuroscience
The Neurodegeneration and Neuroscience program focuses on understanding the molecular
and genetic mechanisms driving Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Using advanced
bioinformatics and transgenic models, researchers study how microglial genes and transcriptional
factors regulate amyloid clearance and neuroinflammation, aiming to identify novel
therapeutic targets to slow or prevent neurodegeneration.
Respiratory Infectious Disease
The Respiratory Infectious Disease program unites researchers studying how viruses
and bacteria cause respiratory illness and how the body responds. Faculty investigate
host–pathogen interactions, viral replication, and immune responses to infections
such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Using advanced molecular tools and animal models,
the team develops novel antiviral strategies, vaccines, and therapies to improve respiratory
health and strengthen preparedness for emerging diseases.
One Health
College of Veterinary Medicine researchers approach their work from a One Health perspective,
which recognizes the connection between the health of people, animals and our shared
environment. Veterinarians play a key role as the professions of veterinary and human
medicine overlap, requiring a collaborative effort on a local, regional, national
and global level.
INTERACT
INTERACT leads the one-health mission of OSU by bringing together clinicians, scientists
and researchers involved in fundamental discovery, industry and foundations under
one roof. INTERACT is endowed with state-of-the art research and clinical infrastructure,
and dedicated personnel. We are currently running several clinical trials. We welcome
researchers from across the nation to collaborate and participate in our preclinical
projects or clinical trials.
