Sessions 1, 2, 3 & 4: Bovine Theriogenology Topics with Dr. Jennifer Koziol

Dr. Jennifer Koziol is a native of Oklahoma where she grew up ranching with her family. She received her Bachelor of Science in 2009 and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2012 from Oklahoma State University. After completing an internship, Dr. Koziol continued her formal training as a Theriogenology resident at Auburn University. Dr. Koziol achieved diplomate status in the American College of Theriogenologists in 2015. In 2021, Dr. Koziol joined the faculty at Texas Tech where she is an Associate Professor of Food Animal Medicine and Surgery.
Session 1: Keys to a Successful BSE
What You Will Learn:
This session focuses on best practices for conducting bull breeding soundness examinations, including equipment troubleshooting, semen evaluation techniques, and recognition of common causes of exam failure. Participants will also explore producer concerns and develop strategies for effectively communicating the value of breeding soundness exams to clients to support reproductive success and herd profitability.
Session 2: Review of Semen Evaluation in Bulls
What You Will Learn: This session examines the importance of sperm morphology in the evaluation of bull fertility, including the causes, progression, and significance of sperm abnormalities. Participants will gain an understanding of testicular degeneration and genetically influenced sperm defects, enabling more accurate interpretation of breeding soundness examinations and reproductive performance.
Session 3: Stuck: Navigating the Toughest Calvings of the Season
What You Will Learn: This session focuses on practical approaches to managing bovine obstetrical cases, including the effective use of obstetrical tools, techniques for fetotomy, and strategies for addressing challenging dystocia situations. Participants will also learn methods for neonatal calf resuscitation and appropriate pharmacologic interventions to improve outcomes for calves following difficult births.
Session 4: From Womb to Weaning – Bridging the Gap in Neonatal Care
What You Will Learn: This session focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of common neonatal calf health challenges, including colostrum management, assessment of passive transfer, sepsis, and umbilical disorders. Participants will learn evidence-based approaches to identifying and treating these conditions to improve calf health, survival, and long-term productivity.
Session 5: Orthopedic Disorders of the Foal by Dr. Chase Whitfield

Dr. Whitfield is a 2011 graduate of Oklahoma State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Whitfield completed a 1-year internship at Weatherford Equine Medical Center in Weatherford, Texas, followed by a 3-year equine surgery residency at Oklahoma State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. He stayed an additional year as a lecturer at OSU and achieved board certification through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He has been in private practice for the past 10 years and recently returned to OSU to be on faculty.
