Integrated Beef Cattle Program
To counteract the shortage of rural veterinarians, Oklahoma State University seeks
to offer intervention strategies for rural sustainability by expanding veterinary
skills and knowledge of herd health, food nutrition, forage management, reproductive
management, and other common needs of beef producers.
Externships
Rural externships give DVM students the opportunity to work alongside experienced
veterinarians in rural or underserved communities. These immersive experiences offer
hands-on learning in mixed animal practice, food animal medicine and community-based
care, helping students develop clinical skills while gaining insight into the unique
challenges and rewards of rural veterinary work.
Clerkships
Our rural clerkship sites offer DVM students advanced, clinical training in real-world
rural practice settings. These rotations provide in-depth experience in areas like
food animal medicine, mixed practice and herd health, while also emphasizing the vital
role of veterinarians in rural communities. Students will gain practical skills and
build professional relationships.
