Our center offers a variety of opportunities designed specifically for DVM students, including hands-on events, externships and clerkship sites in rural communities. Whether you’re exploring your options or already committed to rural practice, we provide real-world experience, mentorship and connections to help you build a meaningful and impactful career.

Integrated Beef Cattle Program

To counteract the shortage of rural veterinarians, Oklahoma State University seeks to offer intervention strategies for rural sustainability by expanding veterinary skills and knowledge of herd health, food nutrition, forage management, reproductive management, and other common needs of beef producers.

Externships

Rural externships give DVM students the opportunity to work alongside experienced veterinarians in rural or underserved communities. These immersive experiences offer hands-on learning in mixed animal practice, food animal medicine and community-based care, helping students develop clinical skills while gaining insight into the unique challenges and rewards of rural veterinary work.

These rotations provide in-depth experience in areas like food animal medicine, mixed practice and herd health, while also emphasizing the vital role of veterinarians in rural communities.
