Cassidy Barry, from Salina, Oklahoma, attended Rogers State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in medical & molecular biology. After veterinary school she hopes to move closer to home and practice at a mixed animal veterinary clinic.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?
I decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine after my undergraduate degree
was finished. I wanted to be in the medical field but hadn’t figured out exactly what
I wanted to do. One day the vet came out and worked our cattle. We talked extensively
about veterinary medicine, and he offered to let me shadow at his clinic. After two
days of visiting the clinic, I was sold. The medical aspect of it was so appealing,
and interacting with the clients was by far one of the biggest selling points into
this profession. I specifically choose Oklahoma State to earn my veterinary degree
because Oklahoma is home. The people are incredible, and I have fallen in love with
Stillwater more than I thought possible.
What does rural veterinary medicine mean to you? What inspired you to pursue rural
and/or large animal medicine?
I am passionate about rural veterinary medicine because it is so personal. As a veterinarian,
you have the responsibility of helping clients make informed decisions, and it is
extra special when you know that client and where they come from and who their family
is. It helps you, as the doctor, make the best decision for that person. I was inspired
by many great veterinarians that practice in rural/large animal areas. Their commitment
to the community, the people, and the animals sparked a genuine interest in this career
path.
What are you most looking forward to as you will soon begin your career?
As I start my career, I am looking forward to two things: One is training my new doctor
brain to solves the cases I will encounter. The second is working at the college with
the veterinarians that helped me fall in love with this profession. I hope to continue
learning how to be a veterinarian, even after school, and return close to home in
practice in a mixed animal clinic.
