Clinical Pathology Residency

The Clinical Pathology Residency Program offers three years of advanced, comprehensive training in diagnostic clinical pathology, with an optional graduate degree for residents who wish to pursue additional research or academic credentials. Our program’s primary goal is to prepare residents for excellence in diagnostic service, teaching, and scholarship while ensuring strong preparation for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) Board Certification Examination.

Residents gain proficiency in diagnostic clinical pathology, develop confidence in oral communication and teaching, and build the skills needed for successful careers in diagnostic laboratories, academia, and industry.

Program Strengths

Our program is distinguished by:

• High-level training in diagnostic clinical pathology
• Daily exposure to digital cytology with a robust caseload of digital cases
• Emphasis on teaching, at both the DVM student and resident levels
• Extensive exposure to infectious disease cases across multiple species
• Externship opportunity with Antech Laboratories, providing experience with a high volume and wide variety of samples and disease processes
• Active participation in small-group and didactic teaching
• Weekly clinical and anatomic pathology rounds with focused preparation for ACVP boards
  

Training Activities

Residents participate in a wide range of educational and service activities, including:

• Diagnostic service duty in clinical pathology
• Resident rounds (journal club, case rounds, and cytology rounds)
• Interdepartmental case conferences
• Instruction of fourth-year veterinary students on the diagnostics rotation
• Independent study and board-focused preparation
• Optional externships and participation in multi-institutional webinars
  

Trainees and Outcomes

Our program typically includes three clinical pathology residents at a time. We are proud of our outstanding board performance, with a 100% pass rate for residents who have taken both Phase I and Phase II of the ACVP Board Examination.

Graduates of our program are well prepared for careers in diagnostic laboratories, academia, and research settings.

Our clinical pathology program has three clinical pathology residents. Our program boasts a high pass rate for Phase I and Phase II ACVP Board Examination. All trainees that have taken the ACVP board examination have passed.
