Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Comparative Biomedical Sciences prepares graduates for careers in industrial, governmental, or academic technical, regulatory or research positions. The plan of study is designed to meet the student's needs and interests and includes courses in molecular and cell biology, pathophysiology, statistics, seminar and electives.
Application deadlines are March 15 for the fall semester and August 15 for the spring semester.

Curriculum

The Ph.D. requires a total of 60 credit hours, including required coursework:

  • CBSC 5013 Comparative Biomedical Sciences I: Cell and Molecular Biology
  • CBSC5023 Comparative Biomedical Sciences II: Pathophysiology
  • STAT 5013 Statistics for Experimenters I
  • STAT 5083 Statistics for Biomedical Researchers
  • CBSC6110 Seminar
  • CBSC6000 PhD Research and Thesis (up to 45 credit hours)

Admissions

Application Deadlines

Applications need to be submitted and completed by the following deadlines.

  • March 15 for Fall admission

  • August 15 for Spring admission

  • December 15 for Summer admission

Program Requirements

  • Earned a BS or higher degree in sciences
  • 3.0 GPA or 75 percent of the maximal GPA is recommended
  • Statement of purpose stating how earning a graduate degree in CBSC will further your education and career goals
  • Three letters of reference from individuals able to assess your potential success in graduate studies
  • Probationary admission status may be awarded to those not having these credentials dependent on recommendations of the CBSC program faculty

Graduate College Requirements

Domestic and Permanent Residents

  • Must complete an application for admission
  • Non-refundable application fee of $50
  • One original transcript from each college or university attended

International

  • Must complete an application for admission
  • Non-refundable application fee of US $75
  • One original transcript from each college or university attended
  • A TOEFL or IELTS score
  • A Financial Affidavit is required for applicants expecting to be F1 or J1 visa holders prior to an I-20 being sent

Other Degree Requirements

  • Participate in research laboratory rotations and/or select dissertation advisor
  • Select dissertation advisory committee (minimum four members)
  • Develop Plan of Study including required and elective coursework
  • Complete required and elective courses to meet credit hour requirements
  • Pass written and oral qualifying exam and present research topic to dissertation advisory committee
  • Apply for Admission to Ph.D. Candidacy
  • Conduct Ph.D. dissertation research project and write Ph.D. dissertation
  • Present public seminar and defend Ph.D. dissertation
