Trailblazer Award

Two students were recognized with the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine's inaugural Trailblazer Award during the 2026 Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair, an honor established to encourage young researchers pursuing interests in veterinary medicine and animal science.
Seth Dunivan and Anthony Kidangathazhe received the award, which recognizes student research demonstrating exceptional promise in animal health, veterinary medicine and related scientific fields. The 2026 fair marked the first year the college sponsored the award.
In addition to supporting student researchers through the Trailblazer Award, OSU College of Veterinary Medicine faculty have long contributed to the fair by serving on the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair's Scientific Review Committee, helping advance STEM education across the state.
Dr. Josh Butcher, associate professor of physiological sciences, said serving on the committee has been a rewarding opportunity to support young scientists while connecting with Oklahoma's research community.
"I've been privileged to work with Dr. Rachael Eaton for a few years as a part of the Scientific Review Committee for OSSEF," Butcher said. "It's a lot of fun, and the conference itself is a great way to connect with the greater Oklahoma community."
Dr. Starkey currently serves on the committee. During earlier years of the fair's partnership with Oklahoma State University, Dr. Jerry Malayer served as committee chair, and Dr. Martin Furr also served as a committee member.
For Dunivan, whose interests center on animal health and the cattle industry, the recognition validated months of research and hard work.
"Winning this award at the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair means a great deal to me, as it recognizes the hard work and research I have put into my project," Dunivan said. "It has strengthened my interest in veterinary medicine and motivated me to continue pursuing opportunities in the field."
Kidangathazhe, a Stillwater Middle School student, said the award reinforced his passion for research that can improve lives.
"This award inspires me to continue focusing on medicines that help those who need them most, and it has also taught me about the importance of interdisciplinary research," Kidangathazhe said. "Thank you to the College of Veterinary Medicine for supporting students who stay curious and explore new topics."
Members of the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair Board of Directors said the college's support helps sustain a program that develops the next generation of scientists, engineers and veterinary professionals. The board also released its 2026 impact report and awards booklet highlighting this year's fair results and sponsor contributions.
Fair officials said they look forward to continuing their partnership with the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine during the 2027 Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair and beyond.
