Oklahoma Rural Veterinary Scholarship Winner - Brock Courtney, class of 2026
Brock Courtney, from Inola, Oklahoma, discovered his passion for veterinary medicine during his undergraduate years after shadowing his local veterinarian, an experience that led to a job and ultimately his career path. Inspired by his rural upbringing and the important role veterinarians play in animal agriculture, he is passionate about serving both animals and the people who depend on them. After veterinary school, he hopes to return to a rural community to practice large animal medicine, build lasting relationships with clients and give back to the community that shaped him.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?
I have a somewhat non-traditional path to pursuing a career in veterinary medicine as I did not initially consider becoming a veterinarian, despite being raised around animals and livestock. I always knew I wanted to work with both animals and people, but had not figured out a career I was interested in that involved both. My interest in veterinary medicine first began during my sophomore year of undergrad when our local veterinarian came to pregnancy check our cows and asked about my future plans. At the time, I was unsure of what I wanted to pursue, and he suggested that I consider veterinary medicine. He later gave me the opportunity to shadow him, which eventually turned into a job. Through that experience, I discovered my passion for the field, ultimately leading me to pursue a career as a veterinarian.
What does rural veterinary medicine mean to you? What inspired you to pursue rural and/or large animal medicine?
Rural veterinary medicine goes beyond simply caring for animals. It also means supporting the owners and producers who rely on those animals for their livelihoods. Growing up in a rural community, I developed a deep appreciation for the people, the work ethic, and the values that define that lifestyle. Being raised in that environment is what inspired me to pursue rural and large animal medicine. I’ve witnessed the important role veterinarians play in animal agriculture and the difference they make in their communities. That experience has motivated me to give back to the community that shaped me and to build a career where I can serve both the animals and the people who depend on them.
What are you most looking forward to as you will soon begin your career?
As I begin my veterinary career, what excites me most is the opportunity to give back to the rural community that raised me. Growing up in a rural community gave me a deep appreciation for the strong relationships that exist between people, animals, and agriculture. I am looking forward to providing veterinary care while also being a trusted resource for the people and producers who have had such a strong influence on my life. I also look forward to building relationships with new clients and being someone they can rely on, not just for animal care, but for support and guidance as well. Additionally, I am excited to be able to mentor and guide the next generation of veterinarians and producers. Just as I was encouraged early on, I plan to play a role in sharing my knowledge and helping to progress both the veterinary and animal agriculture industries.
