Veterinary Medicine

Oklahoma Rural Veterinary Scholarship Winner - Braden Winters, class of 2026

Braden Winters

Braden Winters, from Okmulgee, Oklahoma, discovered his passion for veterinary medicine through his involvement in his family’s business and by showing livestock, where he gained an early appreciation for animal health and agriculture. Inspired by veterinarians in his community who served as mentors and leaders, he pursued a path in mixed-animal rural practice. After veterinary school, he looks forward to continuing to learn through hands-on experience, building relationships with clients, and providing care for both animals and the communities that depend on them.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?

Growing up around my parents’ business, I learned early on the importance of serving others and being involved in my community. Showing livestock throughout my childhood introduced me to veterinary medicine and gave me a firsthand appreciation for the role veterinarians play in animal health and agriculture. The veterinarians in my community served as mentors and role models, and their leadership helped guide me toward pursuing this profession. Through those experiences, I realized that veterinary medicine would allow me to serve both animals and the people who care for them.

What does rural veterinary medicine mean to you? What inspired you to pursue rural and/or large animal medicine?

To me, rural veterinary medicine means dedication to the people and animals that rely on local veterinary care. Rural veterinarians often become more than healthcare providers—they are leaders, educators, and neighbors who people depend on for guidance and support. I was inspired to pursue mixed-animal rural practice because I saw how important it is for these areas to have a veterinarian committed not only to animals but also to the community. I hope to give back by supporting producers, caring for pets, and encouraging young people who may be interested in agriculture or veterinary medicine.

What are you most looking forward to as you will soon begin your career?

As I begin my career, I am most looking forward to continuing to learn through experience and from the people around me. Veterinary medicine provides constant opportunities for growth, and every case, client, and colleague offers something new to learn. I enjoy meeting new people and building relationships, and I am excited to continue developing my skills while caring for animals and supporting the communities that rely on veterinary care.
