Oklahoma Rural Veterinary Scholarship Winner - Blake Runner, class of 2026
Blake Runner, from Oologah, Oklahoma, developed an early interest in veterinary medicine after witnessing a veterinarian perform a C-section on one of his family’s show heifers. That experience, combined with his background in production agriculture and time spent working alongside rural veterinarians, solidified his passion for the field. After veterinary school, he hopes to continue growing as a clinician while building strong relationships with producers and contributing to the success of agricultural operations.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?
My introduction to veterinary medicine began when I had the opportunity to watch a veterinarian perform a C-section on one of my first show heifers. As a young kid, that experience left a lasting impression and helped shape my career goals. My passion for production agriculture and veterinary medicine only continued to grow over time. Working alongside rural veterinarians further deepened my understanding of the profession and the importance of serving both animals and the communities that depend on them. Veterinary medicine has always felt like the right path for me, and after eight years in Stillwater, I am more confident than ever that it is the right choice.
What does rural veterinary medicine mean to you? What inspired you to pursue rural and/or large animal medicine?
To me, rural veterinary medicine represents one of the most rewarding and impactful career paths. It offers unique challenges that require adaptability, resilience, and a broad skill set, all of which make the work incredibly fulfilling. Rural veterinarians are more than just clinicians—they are trusted advisors, problem-solvers, and vital members of their communities. My background in production agriculture, along with the mentorship I’ve received from veterinarians, inspired me to pursue a career in large animal and rural medicine. I hope to follow in their footsteps by becoming a dependable resource and a meaningful asset to the clients and communities I serve.
What are you most looking forward to as you will soon begin your career?
As I begin my career, I am most looking forward to continuing to grow and develop as a clinician while making a tangible difference in the lives of animals and their owners. I am excited to build new skills, strengthen my clinical decision-making, and take on the challenges that come with this profession. I am humbled to have the opportunity to be challenged by a career I have worked toward for so long. Above all, I am blessed to have the opportunity and look forward to being of service to rural communities and contributing to the health of the animals within them.
