Veterinary Medicine

Oklahoma Rural Veterinary Scholarship Winner - Ally Crawford, class of 2027

Ally Crawford

Ally Crawford, from Fitzhugh, Oklahoma, developed her passion for veterinary medicine while growing up on a beef cow-calf operation and gaining early experience in her aunt’s small animal clinic. Through additional work in veterinary clinics during her pre-veterinary years, she discovered the importance of building relationships with clients while caring for both livestock and companion animals. She is especially drawn to the challenges of multi-species practice and values the opportunity to support both animal health and the people and communities who depend on it.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?

Growing up on a beef cow-calf operation in rural Oklahoma sparked my interest in animal health from a young age. This foundation was deepened by my aunt, a small animal veterinarian, who allowed me to spend time in her clinic to experience the profession firsthand. Witnessing the impact she had on both her patients and their owners helped solidify my decision to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Throughout my pre-veterinary years, working in various clinics only fueled this passion. These experiences taught me that veterinary medicine is as much about supporting people as it is about treating animals. Building those client relationships and helping families care for their livestock and pets remains the most rewarding aspect of the field and continues to drive my career goals.

What does rural veterinary medicine mean to you? What inspired you to pursue rural and/or large animal medicine?

To me, rural veterinary medicine is a commitment to being a reliable partner within the community. It goes beyond clinical work; it’s about becoming a dependable resource for producers to improve herd productivity while simultaneously caring for the companion animals that are vital members of rural families.

I am drawn to the unique challenges of multi-species practice and the opportunity to support the livestock industry. By returning to these areas, I hope to be a positive influence that helps sustain the beating heart of Oklahoma - our small towns. Combining my lifelong passion for animal care with a dedication to rural advocacy is what truly motivates me.

What are you most looking forward to as you will soon begin your career?

I am eager to transition from the classroom to the clinic, applying my knowledge to real-world cases, and navigating the daily challenges of private practice. I particularly look forward to building lasting partnerships with my clients and supporting their livelihoods. Above all, I am excited to finally step into the career I have been passionate about since I was young, continuing to learn from each experience, and growing into a confident, capable veterinary professional.
