Dr. Brewer’s career spans service as Oklahoma State University faculty, private practitioner, State Veterinarian of Oklahoma, and USDA APHIS Veterinary Services Area Veterinarian in Charge. Her personal and professional contributions continue to make her an advocate and role model for future veterinarians.
Dr. Brewer navigated veterinary school as a single mom raising her children Taylor, Regan, and Sarah. Her caring nature forged strong bonds with her classmates that still hold today. Immediately following graduation, she served on faculty at OSU as a large animal clinician.
In 1984, Dr. Brewer Walker along with her husband Dr. Jim Walker established Cimarron Veterinary Services in Chickasha, OK. Together they served the Grady County area for over twenty years. Rural veterinary practice allowed her to treat a variety of animals, including those that were unexpected such as the Carson & Barnes Circus, all while managing a family. Dr. Brewer established strong relationships with her clients and could be counted on night or day. In the Chickasha community, Dr. Brewer served as Chair of the Chamber of Commerce Livestock Committee for 20 years, working with FFA and 4-H students, and as Superintendent for the Grady County Livestock Show for 17 years.
In 2003 Dr. Brewer joined the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry (ODAFF) as a staff veterinarian. Shortly thereafter, in 2005, she became the first woman to serve as State Veterinarian for Oklahoma. In this role, she streamlined the office to respond to tuberculosis in cattle, Chronic Wasting Disease in deer, and implemented Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy control measures. In 2009, she received the Distinguished Service Award at the annual Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association Conference for her efforts.
Following her time at ODAFF, in 2011, Dr. Brewer became the Area Veterinarian In Charge for Arkansas and later Oklahoma. Dr. Brewer’s seasoned and results-driven style impacted the veterinary profession through her proven ability to create and conduct a variety of detailed evaluations and analyses of animal health programs, as well as inspire those she leads. Her policy implementation skills and client focused efforts developed effective disease management and biosecurity practices for livestock and poultry.
Additionally, Dr. Brewer became well-known for monitoring program budgets and Veterinary Services Cooperative Agreements. Her experience in the field has guided senior level decision-making at the national and international levels. She has led teams across the country including serving as Incident Commander for foreign animal disease responses to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, Exotic Newcastle Disease, and African Swine Fever Preparedness Training.
Dr. Brewer continues to actively collaborate with teaching OSU CVM students regulatory medicine, instructing laboratory aspects of involvement of TB testing cattle, scrapie sample collection in small ruminants and proficiencies in performing tasks for accredited veterinary practice. She has also served the board of the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and many state and national organizations advancing the state of Oklahoma and agriculture.
Dr. Brewer is an honorary State FFA Degree recipient and is a Life Lion’s Club member. Her service to PEO has been instrumental in securing scholarships for deserving women in need, including those in the veterinary profession.
