Our Mission

INTERACT supports OSU’s One Health mission by bringing together researchers from four colleges to address health threats caused by infectious diseases.

The program uses advanced computing tools to track the spread of diseases across Oklahoma by analyzing genetic information from viruses and other pathogens. We are developing affordable, high-volume testing methods that can be used for routine monitoring and combining genetic data, mapping tools and predictive models to understand where outbreaks are happening and where they may occur next.

Our long-term goal is to monitor pathogens monthly in all 77 Oklahoma counties and turn complex scientific data into clear and useful information that helps protect animal, human and environmental health.

Our Research

Our research uses genetic data, advanced computing, artificial intelligence, mapping tools and predictive models to better understand how infectious diseases spread. We focus on tracking viruses and bacteria such as influenza, COVID-19, RSV and other disease-causing pathogens. By studying their genetic makeup, we can identify new variants. This can help us understand how diseases move through populations, see how pathogens adapt to different hosts, and monitor the rise of antibiotic resistance.

We are working to improve disease detection in rural and underserved communities by developing testing methods that are fast, reliable, affordable and simple.

We are also building and testing new AI tools that help scientists interpret genetic information, identify promising research questions, and support public health decisions.

By combining genetic data with information about geography, the environment, agriculture and disease trends, INTERACT turns complex, scientific data into practical tools that help Oklahoma better prepare for future health threats affecting people, animals and the environment.
