Opioid CE – Pain Management in Animals

The College of Veterinary Medicine announces a new online continuing education course for veterinary professionals.  This course is brought to you by the OSU CVM and the Oklahoma Veterinary Board. This course is offered for a reduced rate due to funding support from the Veterinary Board.   

For Oklahoma licensees, this course satisfies the full 2 hour requirement for the review of CDS laws and/or the Oklahoma Veterinary Practice Act including the 1 hour requirement for DEA registrants.

During this course, participants will attend lectures with Dr. Stefano Di Concetto on “Pain Management in Animals – Opioid and Non-Opioid Alternatives.”  Dr. Stefano Di Concetto is originally from Mantua, Italy, Dr. Di Concetto earned his DVM degree from the University of Parma in Italy and his MSc from the Royal Veterinary College and Zoological Society of London. His research interests are the use of veterinary acupuncture in anesthesia practice and pain control in ruminants. Before becoming an anesthesiologist, Di Concetto was a zoo veterinarian.

In the first module, attendees will learn about the origin of opioids, as well as the mechanisms of action of opioid receptors, explore the advantages and disadvantages of opioids in clinical use, review common routes of opioid administration and opioid choice protocols.

In module two, attendees will review the definitions of pain, explore the differences between pain and nociception, examine the pathways of pain and the mechanisms of action, and review pain classifications.

In module three, participants will explore pain scoring systems for feline, canine, equine and bovine clients.

In module four, attendees with identify pharmacological control of pain, analgesia options without opioids, and review analgesic surgical protocols.

Time Requirements: Approximately 2 hours.  This course has 4 modules which can be completed at your own pace.  NOTE:  To use this course for 2021 Oklahoma CE, please complete the course by June 30, 2021.
