Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine will offer a free castration clinic on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 14 and 15, from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Thursday’s clinic will be held at the Charles and Linda Cline Equine Teaching Center and Friday’s clinic will be held at the OSU Veterinary Medical Hospital (large animal entrance). A limited number of tickets are available for each clinic. Castrations will be performed by third year veterinary students under the supervision of board-certified faculty veterinarians from the veterinary hospital.
Owners will be contacted prior to the surgery date to confirm participation. There is no charge for the castration; however, costs associated with complications occurring due to the inherent risk of the procedure are the owner’s responsibility.
Eligible horses, donkeys or ponies for field castrations must be halter broke to safely lead on halter and easily handled. Both testicles must be visibly descended; no cryporchids. Animals must have a current Coggins Test (within one year) and need to be trailered to and from the location the day of the procedure. Each animal will receive tetanus protection, Procaine penicillin, anesthesia, and pain/anti-inflammatory medication. Preferred age range for castration is 1 month to 8 years (please contact us if you have an older horse). Registration is limited to two horses per owner (if you have more than two horses, please contact us).
All animals need to be dropped off at the Equine Teaching Center (Thursday clinic) or Veterinary Medical Hospital large animal entrance (Friday clinic) by 12:30 p.m. Animals may be picked up no earlier than 5 p.m. Space is limited; early registration is recommended.
